Why extreme cage fighters are turning to cannabidiol for pain
After an epic back and forth 5-round battle at UFC 202 with the UFC’s featherweight champion Conor McGregor, Nate Diaz had to face reporters for his mandatory post-fight media obligations.
Battered and bruised but in high spirits, Nate was seen puffing on a vape pen with a mysterious oil inside. During his media scrum, he later revealed that he was vaping cannabidiol or CBD oil.
“It’s CBD. It helps with the healing process and inflammation, stuff like that. So you want to get these for before and after the fights, training. It’ll make your life a better place,” Diaz explained.
Cannabidiol is the non-psychoactive, non-addictive component in cannabis that is used for its medical purposes to treat various ailments. CBD is known to have a wide range of effects that are therapeutically useful, including anti-seizure, antioxidant, neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anti-tumor, anti-psychotic, and anti-anxiety properties.
Diaz explained that he was using it to alleviate himself from the aches and pains after a five-round war in which both fighters took their licks.
Unfortunately, although CBD is an excellent alternative to highly addictive prescription painkillers, the U.S. Anti Doping Agency (USADA) has a strict ban on fighters using it during the in-competition period.
Even though Diaz’s tests did come out clean, he still got slapped with a public warning from USADA.
“Based on these circumstances, USADA determined that a public warning was an appropriate response to Diaz’s use of a specified substance during the in-competition period,” USADA’s statement read.
Spreading through MMA
But Nate Diaz isn’t the only professional athlete who has made headlines as an advocate for the medicinal benefits of cannabidiol.
An up and coming fighter from Denver, Colorado named Ian “The Hurricane” Heinisch is a huge supporter of CBD for athletes and is even sponsored by hemp extract company Receptra Naturals.
For Ian, full spectrum hemp oil is an essential component of his mental and physical recovery. It helps aid with digestion and encourages a restful sleep cycle.
Antioxidants also reduce free radicals and helps to oxidize muscles and joints.
CBD’s neuroprotectant qualities also helps with recovery from head trauma that’s common in MMA fighters. Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is a progressive degenerative disease found in people who have had a severe blow or repeated blows to the head. CTE is also very common in sports like football, rugby, ice hockey, boxing, professional wrestling, stunt performing, and bull riding.
Yet in all of these sports, when you speak with the players, coaches, doctors, or other team personnel, the standard procedure is to treat pain with powerful prescription opioids.
Are highly addictive painkillers any safer than CBD?
The answer is unequivocally no.
What these athletes say about CBD oil and its effects are well-established facts. Numerous studies on the subject have proven that CBD can be used effectively for pain, inflammation, neuroprotection, and many other issues.
For fighters like Ian and Nate, not only is CBD an excellent alternative to prescription drugs, it has proven to be highly effective in making many of their aches and pains much less problematic.
As a novel painkiller and anti-inflammatory, CBD could have the potential to make highly addictive and harmful painkillers obsolete.
More importantly, if a fighter wants to vape CBD after he goes through five hellish rounds of getting repeatedly punched, kicked, and elbowed in the face for the amusement of spectators…
