CBD Can Help Several Stress Disorders

Groundbreaking research into the health benefits of the plant compound cannabidiol or CBD – the non-intoxicating chemical compound found in the cannabis plant has yielded impressive results in recent years.

Numerous studies have found that CBD may be therapeutically useful for treating a variety of different conditions that affect not only the body, but also the mind. According to the National Institutes of Health, CBD has been found to possess anti-seizure, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, and anti-psychotic properties.

While anxiety is considered a normal reaction to stress (which may be beneficial in some situations), excessive anxiety may negatively affect a person’s day-to-day living.  There are a wide variety of anxiety disorders, including post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and specific phobias to name a few.  Collectively, anxiety disorders are among the most common mental disorders experienced by Americans.

One 2006 study published in the Brazilian Journal of Medical and Biological Research found that CBD significantly reduced anxiety and decreased paranoid-like symptoms induced by THC.

Similarly, a 2010 study published in the journal Neuropsychopharmacology found that some of the effects of CBD on brain function and psychiatric symptoms were in the opposite direction to those of  THC.  The authors concluded that CBD might have a role in the treatment of psychotic and anxiety disorders and found CBD significantly reduced the anxiety induced by simulated public speaking in  phobia patients.

Here’s how to find the correct CBD dosage for you.

CBD for Anxiety Disorders

CBD may help symptoms arising from excessive fear and anxiety occur in a number of neuropsychiatric disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder (PD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), social anxiety disorder (SAD), and obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD).

These anxiety-related disorders are associated with a diminished sense of well-being, elevated rates of unemployment and relationship breakdown, and elevated suicide risk and constitute an immense social and economic burden on society.

Much evidence shows that CBD exhibits a broad range of actions relevant to multiple PTSD symptoms.  These include reducing arousal and avoidance, preventing the long-term adverse effects of stress, as well as  blocking persistent fear memories.  Human testing also  supports preclinical findings, and suggests CBD has minimal sedative effects and an excellent safety profile.

Finally, the authors concluded that their review emphasizes the potential value and need for further study of CBD in the treatment of anxiety disorders.
