What is Cannabidiol?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a remarkable natural compound found in the cannabis plant. Numerous clinical studies, some sponsored by the U.S government, have shown CBD to have extraordinary potential in treating a wide range of health problems: Alzeimer’s disease, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, Arthritis, anxiety, psychosis… Click here for a full list of conditions.

CBD belongs to a class of molecules called cannabinoids, technically phyto-cannabinoids. The cannabis plant contains more than 100 different cannabinoids, however CBD and THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) are present in a much greater volume, and have the most health benefits. Our body actually has receptors for cannabinoids. (See The Endo-Cannabinod System)

CBD (unlike THC) is not psychoactive. This attribute has proven to be a God send for people who want the medicinal benefits of cannabinoids, but don’t want to feel the sometimes disorienting side effects of THC. Plus CBD has additional health benefits that THC does not have.

What is the difference between Marijuana and Hemp?

A cannabis plant that contains more than 0.3% of THC (the psychoactive and federally illegal cannabinoid) is called marijuana. A cannabis plant that contains less than 0.3% of THC is called hemp. It’s as simple as that.

Marijuana and hemp plants can sometimes look different, as in the case of European and Chinese industrial hemp, which, unlike marijuana, grows long tall stalks, but essentially marijuana and hemp are the same plant, and some strains look exactly the same. In those cases the only way to tell which is which is to test them to determine THC levels.

Is Industrial Hemp a good source for CBD?

That depends! Industrial hemp is considered the world’s most versatile plant. It can be used to produce fabric, rope, paper, bio-fuel, just to name a few of its many wonders. Industrial hemp also contains CBD at different levels depending of the particular strain of the plant.

Public demand for CBD grew exponentially after the remarkable benefits of CBD were seen on the very popular CNN documentaries hosted by Dr. Sanjay Gupta.

The public wanted CBD and they wanted it now! But people who didn’t live in states that had medical marijuana programs were out of luck. Very soon entrepreneurs had a solution. Hemp! It contains CBD and hemp products are legal in all 50 states. At that time, Industrial hemp was mostly grown in eastern Europe and China.

There were problems from the start. Foreign industrial hemp was not bred for health purposes and therefore only contained trace amounts of CBD. It took a tremendous amount of foreign industrial hemp plants to produce a small amount CBD rich hemp oil. What’s more, the expensive and time consuming filtering process necessary to remove the contaminants from CBD oil extracted from foreign industrial hemp (mostly grown in soil containing multiple toxins) led some careless companies to bypass this important process altogether.

In some cases, the final product was a contaminated hemp oil paste that was either mixed with tinctures and sold in varying strengths, or sold as concentrates in syringes, and small jars. These products are still sold. The actual amount of CBD contained in most of the products offered online vary greatly. Independent tests done by the FDA and other labs found CBD levels to be well below the amounts stated on their labels.

Thankfully, the situation is improving. Now not everybody online sells questionable CBD products. A hand full of experienced cannabis growers, almost exclusively in the USA, have been able to breed industrial hemp plants that contain extremely high levels of CBD. Some of these hemp strains contain 20-30 times more CBD per plant than foreign industrial hemp, and they are grown in toxin free fertile soil.

That is why we advise only to purchase Cannabidiol rich hemp oil products that have been derived from industrial hemp grown in the USA. Never buy before you verify!
